Volunteer

Volunteer to work with a safe, experienced DC VOAD partner. DC VOAD members respond to disasters, emergencies, or planned events in the District of Columbia.

About Volunteering

Volunteering for a VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) organization involves working within a coordinated network of nonprofits, faith-based groups, and community organizations focused on disaster response and recovery. DC VOAD connects DC nonprofit organizations in need to potential volunteers. Organizations request volunteers for specific events or ongoing opportunities.

Be aware of the following when becoming a volunteer:

Time Commitment: Know how long you’re available and be honest about it.

Emotional Resilience: Disaster zones can be emotionally intense.

Cultural Sensitivity: Respect the affected community’s norms and values.

Thank you for helping DC and its vibrant nonprofit community.

Seeing images of disaster may compel you to head to the impacted area. Please don’t underestimate the complexity of working in a disaster area. When a need has been identified by the DC government (HSEMA) and the local community has unmet needs, DC will reach out to DC VOAD to request volunteer support.

  • DC VOAD will wait until it is safe and opportunities have been identified before requesting organizations and volunteers to assist.
  • It is critical to maintain your own personal safety at all times.

Recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention. There may be volunteer needs for many months, often years, after the disaster, especially when the community enters the long-term recovery period.
